Barton’s state-track run added another chapter to a spring that has kept Phillips County in the statewide athletics conversation. At the Arkansas Activities Association’s 2A state meet in Quitman on May 6, Barton athletes turned in a strong all-around showing, and Smith helped anchor the effort with a runner-up finish and high-point honors.

That kind of result matters because it points to more than one standout performance. A meet described as an all-around showing usually comes from depth across the roster, where points can come from relays, sprints, distance races and field events instead of a single star carrying the day. For Barton High School in Lexa, that suggests a program that has built something repeatable, with athletes prepared to contribute when the postseason arrives.

The timing also fit into a broader run for Phillips County schools. Central’s first outdoor state track title gave the county another reason to pay attention to spring track and field, and Barton’s showing kept the focus on how much local talent is competing on Arkansas’ biggest stages. The AAA had set the 2026 championship locations on Jan. 15, with the Class 2A meet assigned to Quitman, placing Barton in a postseason field that demanded consistency as much as speed.

Barton’s track success also follows a basketball season that already put the school district in front of the county. On April 14, Phillips County Quorum Court recognized the Barton High School boys basketball team after it won the 2026 Arkansas Class 2A state championship with a 34-5 record, capped by an 89-44 victory over Mt. Vernon-Enola on March 12. Together, those results show a Barton program producing sustained visibility across sports, the kind that can help local students attract attention, build confidence and stay connected to school life.

For Phillips County, that steady stream of results means Barton is not just winning individual moments. It is keeping the county relevant in statewide competition and giving its athletes a platform that can lead to recruiting attention, scholarship conversations and a stronger sense that excellence can grow right at home.
