Basement Fire in Kennedy Street Duplex Displaces Three, Injures One Firefighter
A Kennedy Street basement fire injured a PGFD firefighter and displaced three adults Wednesday; investigators are now working to determine what ignited the blaze.

A basement fire tore through a three-story Kennedy Street duplex Wednesday, sending one Prince George's County firefighter to the hospital and forcing three adult residents from their home as fire investigators were called to the scene.
Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department crews contained the fire to the basement level, preventing it from climbing through the building's upper floors. The quick containment spared other units in the duplex from direct damage, though one firefighter sustained minor injuries in the effort and was transported for treatment. Three adults whose unit was compromised are now receiving emergency support from the Prince George's County Office of Emergency Management.
What ignited the blaze was under active investigation Wednesday. Basement fires in residential buildings frequently trace to electrical faults, aging or overloaded wiring, or supplemental heating equipment left running near combustibles, all conditions that can develop gradually in lower-level units that go years without a thorough inspection. Whether the Kennedy Street property carried any prior housing code complaints or had been recently reviewed by Prince George's County's Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement was not immediately available; fire investigators typically cross-reference that record as part of an origin-and-cause determination.
The three displaced adults can also reach the American Red Cross, which partners with OEM to provide emergency shelter, meals, and essential supplies to fire victims at no cost through its 24-hour disaster relief line. For renters displaced through no fault of their own, Maryland law provides protections around lease obligations and security deposit returns; the Prince George's County Rental and Housing Court can help tenants document those rights in the days ahead.
PGFD offers free smoke alarm installation for county residents through its community outreach program. On a block where a single basement fire displaced three adults and put a firefighter in the hospital, that service is worth a call.
