Bowie State University Raises Historic $128.5 Million in BSU BOLD Campaign

Bowie State University has completed the largest fundraising effort in its 161-year history, raising $128.5 million through BSU BOLD: The Campaign for Excellence, a milestone the university announced publicly on March 9, 2026. The final total more than doubled the campaign's stated goal and positions the Prince George's County institution among the top 10 HBCUs in the country by endowment size.

The campaign concluded in December 2025 after drawing contributions from alumni, philanthropic partners, and corporate donors. Its stated purpose was to expand scholarship access, drive academic innovation, and fund student success initiatives across programs in STEM, digital media, public service, and entrepreneurship.

The single largest catalyst in the campaign's final stretch came from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Two months before the December 2025 conclusion, Bowie State received a $50 million gift from Scott, which the university described as the largest donation in its history. Scott had previously given Bowie State $25 million in December 2020, a gift the university credits with prompting it to double its original campaign goal to $50 million. According to the university, Bowie State was among only a handful of institutions nationwide to receive a second gift from Scott, which it characterized as an acknowledgment of confidence in the university's stewardship and the measurable impact of her earlier investment on students.

"It's been thrilling and very rewarding," a university spokesperson said in a video statement accompanying the announcement.

The financial transformation extends well beyond the campaign total. Under President Breaux, Bowie State's endowment grew from $7 million to more than $50 million over seven years, a figure the university projects will climb to $85 million by fiscal year 2027. The university describes that trajectory as a 12-fold increase over the past decade.

Founded in 1865, Bowie State holds the distinction of being Maryland's oldest historically Black university and one of the oldest HBCUs in the United States. NBC4 Washington, which reported the milestone as a $128 million figure, framed the achievement as significant given broader pressures facing higher education nationally.

The university says the BSU BOLD campaign funds will support new initiatives designed to prepare students for careers in rapidly evolving industries, building on Bowie State's established role as an engine of opportunity for Black students in Prince George's County and beyond.
