What should have been a community celebration in Laurel turned into a public-safety failure when gunfire and stabbings in a busy shopping center parking lot left five people injured. Police said three people were shot and two were stabbed near the Centre at Laurel, in the 13600 block of Baltimore Avenue, around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6.

Laurel Police Chief Russell Hamill said officers were already monitoring a large gathering under two tents at the restaurant before a fight broke out and the event was shut down early. The violence unfolded in the parking lot between Amigos Mexican Grill and LongHorn Steakhouse, a stretch of Baltimore Avenue where dinner traffic, hotel guests and shoppers usually mix late into the evening.

Police said the shooting and the stabbings were not connected. All five victims were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition, with doctors expecting them to survive. Investigators also found a car near the scene with bullet holes and a shattered window, evidence of how quickly the situation spread beyond the initial fight.

The stabbing suspect was identified as Shon Juan Cook Jr., 26, of Howard County. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the stabbings. Police said the suspected shooter was identified through video footage, and that gunfire was also captured on video and posted on social media, but he had not been publicly named.

The incident puts a hard spotlight on how quickly a crowded holiday event can overwhelm a commercial corridor. The Centre at Laurel sits at 13600 Baltimore Ave. and draws heavy traffic along Baltimore Avenue near Route 1, with restaurants such as LongHorn Steakhouse anchoring the center. For nearby businesses, that kind of crowd can mean a strong night of sales. Once violence starts, it becomes a test of security, coordination and whether police are expected to do too much, too late.

The key questions now are how a celebration of that size was managed, how the crowd got out of control and what police learned from the video that led them to the suspected shooter. For Laurel, the night ended with five injured and a shopping center turned into a crime scene.
