Fort Washington Commercial Building Fire Contained, No Injuries Reported

Smoke was showing from a one-story commercial building on the 9200 block of Livingston Road in Fort Washington when Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department crews arrived at 4:52 p.m. Monday. Firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze, and no injuries were reported at the scene.

After suppressing the fire, crews shifted to ventilating the building to clear smoke from the structure. PGFD fire investigators simultaneously began a cause-and-origin examination of the site. As of Monday evening, the cause remained undetermined.

The two PGFD stations nearest to the 9200 block of Livingston Road are Station 832, the Allentown Road Volunteer Fire Department at 8709 Allentown Road, and Station 847, the Silesia/Fort Washington station at 10900 Fort Washington Road. Professional firefighters assigned to both Fort Washington stations are represented by IAFF Local 1619.

The incident scene falls within Prince George's County Police Department's District VII service area, commanded by Acting Major James Kelti (#1082) at the District VII station on Fort Washington Road.

The Livingston Road fire is one of roughly 200 structure fires PGFD handles annually across the county. The department, established in 1966, is among the largest combination career-and-volunteer departments in the United States, operating 45 Fire/EMS stations that collectively serve approximately 946,000 residents across 499 square miles. It logs more than 400 incidents per day and more than 157,000 per year, with roughly 75% of those responses handled by EMS rather than fire suppression units.

Fire investigators have not yet identified what ignited the commercial building on Livingston Road.
