A driver was ejected from their vehicle and killed early Sunday morning when three cars collided on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Greenbelt Road in Prince George's County, shutting down the highway's southbound lanes as investigators worked the scene.

The crash happened shortly after midnight and closed the southbound lanes of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway just south of Powder Mill Road. One person was taken to a hospital by medevac helicopter and later died. Three people from a second vehicle were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while two people from a third vehicle were uninjured, U.S. Park Police said.

The crash involved a rollover with ejection and entrapment, according to initial reports. When officers arrived on scene, they found that one driver had been thrown from their vehicle. The U.S. Park Police Eagle helicopter flew the victim to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where they later died, officials said.

Southbound lanes of the parkway just south of Powder Mill Road remained closed into Sunday morning as U.S. Park Police worked to reconstruct the circumstances of the crash. The identities of those involved have not been released.

The Baltimore-Washington Parkway, designated as Maryland Route 295, runs through the heart of Prince George's County and is maintained in part by the National Park Service, which restricts commercial vehicles from using the roadway south of MD-175. The stretch near Greenbelt Road and Powder Mill Road has been the site of multiple serious crashes in recent years.

U.S. Park Police said the incident remains under investigation, and no charges or citations have been announced.
