A motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Cherrywood Lane and Kenilworth Avenue in Greenbelt on Feb. 23, 2026 left one person dead at the scene after being ejected from a vehicle and at least three others injured, emergency crews said.

Prince George’s County fire and rescue units responded to the intersection around 4:40 p.m. that afternoon; another report placed initial firefighter response shortly after 4:30 p.m. Firefighters performed extrication on scene, cutting one person out of a vehicle, and crews transported multiple patients from the crash site.

Officials said one person was thrown from a vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Of those transported, one was in critical condition and two were suffering from serious injuries, according to the on-scene account of patient condition and transport status. The number of vehicles involved and the identities of the victims have not been released.

Emergency responders worked at the Kenilworth Avenue and Cherrywood Lane intersection to stabilize and remove occupants before ambulances departed the scene; the responding units performed standard extrication procedures to free at least one trapped person. No hospital names, causes of the crash, or information about impairment or citations had been released as of the last update.

The intersection on Kenilworth Avenue is also designated Route 201 north of Cherrywood Lane, and it has been the site of prior serious incidents. The Greenbelt Police Department placed a memorial sign on Kenilworth Avenue/Route 201 north of Cherrywood Lane on November 5 to honor Corporal Christine Peters, who “died from injuries on January 14, 2021, after she was struck by a car while attending to a car crash there on January 2.” Police Chief Richard Bowers, speaking about Peters at that memorial, said, “Everything that we do to remember Chris is really for the family… and our law enforcement family,” and added, “She had such a unique personality and she meant so much to so many. She was a wife, mother and mentor.” Bowers recalled asking, “what would Chris do?” and said Peters’ remembered counsel was “just shut up and get out of the way.”

Authorities have not released names, vehicle descriptions, or a cause for the Feb. 23 crash. The investigation remains active; Prince George’s County fire and rescue and law enforcement continue to process the scene and gather evidence, and officials said they will provide additional information when it is available.
