Prince George’s County Public Schools opened graduation season with a sharper pitch than a ceremony schedule: seniors who qualify for a new Bowie State University direct-admissions track can move toward college without application fees, essays or recommendation letters.

The district said graduation ceremonies began Friday, May 15, with the Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George’s Community College among the first schools on the calendar. Its ceremony was set for 10:30 a.m. at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, while Largo High School was listed among the schools graduating later in the season.

The bigger shift for county families is the memorandum of understanding between PGCPS and Bowie State that creates a fast-track direct-admissions program for eligible graduating seniors. Under the arrangement, students need at least a 3.0 GPA, and Bowie State says test scores are optional. PGCPS said the process also includes support for FAFSA completion, aiming to cut through the financial and administrative steps that often derail college enrollment before it starts.

That matters in Prince George’s County, where affordability and paperwork are often the difference between graduating and actually enrolling. Bowie State said it has already awarded more than 600 scholarships to PGCPS seniors for the fall 2026 semester, with those awards totaling more than $1 million. The university said another $600,000 in scholarships will be provided, backed by MacKenzie Scott donations.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Shawn Joseph framed the partnership as more than a ceremonial tie-up, calling it a “monumental homecoming for our students' dreams.” Bowie State, which describes itself as Maryland’s oldest HBCU and one of the 10 oldest universities in the nation, is using its historical identity to deepen a pipeline that has long served students from Bowie, Lanham, Largo and across the county.

The announcement came as more than 3,000 seniors gathered at Bowie Baysox Stadium for National College Decision Day on May 4, a sign that PGCPS is trying to turn spring graduation into a broader college-access campaign. For the Class of 2026, the message is clear: the diploma is only the first step, and the county is working to make sure more students can take the next one.
