Prince George's Councilmember Leads Holiday Toy and Coat Drive
Councilmember Calvin S. Hawkins II partnered with Brothers of the Gamma Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Friendship Charities Foundation to run a holiday toy and coat drive at Suitland Elementary School. The two night distribution aimed to fill urgent winter needs for students and families, highlighting gaps in local winter assistance and the role of elected officials in direct community support.

Prince George's County Councilmember Calvin S. Hawkins II, working with Brothers of the Gamma Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Friendship Charities Foundation, announced and carried out a Holiday Extravaganza Toy and Coat Drive at Suitland Elementary School on December 16 and December 17, 2025. The events ran from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at 4650 Towne Park Road in Suitland and invited donations of new coats in sizes 5 to 18 as well as financial contributions to purchase coats and toys.
Organizers framed the drive as a response to community need during the holiday season, focusing on ensuring students and families receive tangible support as colder weather arrives. The coordination between an elected official, a fraternal organization, and a charitable foundation reflects a common model for delivering immediate relief in Prince George's County where community groups often supplement public assistance programs.
The drive underscores policy and institutional questions about how winter clothing and holiday needs are met across the county. While direct service events provide immediate benefits, they also point to gaps in sustained, system level supports for low income families. Council members and county agencies continue to face pressure to convert episodic campaigns into durable programs that reduce reliance on seasonal drives.

For residents, toy and coat distributions can reduce barriers to school attendance and contribute to family stability during winter months. Local nonprofits and school based distribution points have historically been central to closing short term needs, but the recurrence of such efforts suggests a broader need for coordinated county planning on child welfare and winter readiness.
Council staff provided contact information for sponsorship, volunteer, and partner inquiries and directed residents to the Prince George's County Council website at pgccouncil.us/CivicAlerts.aspx for additional details. As the county moves through the winter season, elected officials and agencies will face continued scrutiny over how they translate short term relief into long term policies that ensure all students and families have what they need.
