Prince George's County Parks Offer Year Round Outdoor Health Benefits
Prince George's County maintains a network of parks, trails and outdoor destinations that serve as year round resources for physical activity, mental health and community gathering. Knowing what each site offers and how to access programming matters for families, seniors and residents seeking equitable outdoor space close to home.

Prince George's County residents have access to a diverse set of parks and green spaces that provide recreation, education and community programming throughout the year. Greenbelt Park, managed by the National Park Service, offers wooded camping, hiking and scenic trails adjacent to Greenbelt communities. Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro is a family friendly destination with playgrounds, a miniature train, a carousel, sports fields and walking trails. Parts of the Patuxent Research Refuge lie within Prince George's County, offering wildlife viewing, nature trails and environmental education opportunities. Bladensburg Waterfront Park near the Route 50 corridor provides river access, walking paths and picnic areas. College Park Aviation Museum and nearby trail networks combine museum exhibits with parkland for walking and events. Montpelier Arts Center and the Montpelier Mansion grounds host cultural programming and landscaped grounds for visitors.
These sites are more than places for recreation. Accessible green space supports physical activity, reduces isolation and can serve as venues for public health outreach and community programs. For families with limited indoor recreation options or residents without reliable transportation, nearby parks offer free or low cost ways to stay active and connected. Seasonal events and arts programming expand those benefits by creating gathering spaces for neighbors across generations.
At the same time, access is not evenly distributed. Transportation barriers, limited programming in some neighborhoods and the need for continued investment in maintenance and inclusive design can limit who benefits. Local health and parks policy that prioritizes transit connections, ADA accessibility, multilingual outreach and funding for free programming would help ensure parks advance health equity countywide.
Many county parks provide seasonal events, indoor and outdoor arts programming, reservable picnic areas and volunteer opportunities. Check pgparks.com or the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission calendar for hours, event schedules and weather related closures. Planning and policy decisions at the county level will determine how effectively these green spaces continue to support public health and community resilience in Prince George's County.
