Two marked Montgomery County police cruisers were vandalized after a large group of vehicles linked to an illegal street takeover gathered at the intersection of East-West Highway and Connecticut Avenue in the Silver Spring business district. Montgomery County Police said officers were notified at approximately 12:39 a.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2026, after the convoy of cars moved from Prince George’s County toward the Silver Spring District central business district.

Montgomery County patrol units, a K9 team and the Aviation Section monitored the group and closed most intersections the vehicles were heading toward, but drivers continued along East-West Highway, performed donuts in the roadway and blocked traffic. Several people exited their cars and stood in the intersection, preventing officers from entering while the activity continued; radio traffic captured on scene included: “They’re trying to take over the intersection now. We’ve got a bunch of civilians walking in the lane.”

During the incident two marked Montgomery County cruisers sustained damage. In one case an officer was inside his vehicle when the rear window was broken and the windshield was smashed, Montgomery County Police said. Maryland State Police responded to assist with clearing the area and with the ongoing investigation; no officers were injured, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police 2nd District Investigative Section.

Prince George’s County Police and Maryland State Police had been conducting enforcement related to illegal car gatherings beginning earlier that night. PGPD officers responded to multiple illegal gatherings from 10 p.m. on February 21 through the early morning hours of February 22, and law enforcement reported recovering three handguns during traffic stops prior to the Silver Spring incident. Those cross-jurisdiction stops included at least one vehicle later located on Allentown Road where an occupant was observed swapping license plates.

As part of the regional crackdown on illegal car rallies, Prince George’s County authorities said two Pennsylvania men are facing charges after participating in an illegal car rally in Prince George’s County: 23-year-old Blake Miller of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, and 22-year-old Gus Roth of Hanover, Pennsylvania. PGPD reporting says officers found a vehicle with swapped plates, and that Miller allegedly attempted to flee, struck multiple vehicles, then tried to run before being apprehended. Available reporting does not explicitly tie Miller or Roth to the Silver Spring cruiser vandalism.

Montgomery County Police said dashcam footage captures vehicles blocking the roadway and performing burnouts, and several outlets obtained or published dash camera video showing the takeover moving from Prince George’s County into Silver Spring. The MCPD 2nd District Investigative Section is asking the public to help identify suspects; tips can be submitted by calling 866-411-8477 and are eligible for a reward of up to $10,000 while the investigation continues.
