Suspect Detained After Shots Fired Monday in Langley Park
Police detained a suspect near Riggs Road Monday after gunfire erupted on Langley Park's 7900 block of 18th Avenue, one block from a prior shooting scene.

Gunfire on the 7900 block of 18th Avenue Monday evening brought Prince George's County Police Department officers to a stretch of Langley Park where residents and investigators already know the geography of violence. One male suspect was detained near Riggs Road; no injuries were reported.
PGPD has not publicly disclosed the suspect's identity, whether formal charges have been filed, or what evidence was recovered at the scene. It also remains unclear whether the individual was formally arrested or later released after questioning.
The block sits within walking distance of Langley Park-McCormick Elementary School, placing Monday's incident at the center of one of the D.C. region's most densely populated immigrant neighborhoods. The surrounding 18th Avenue and Riggs Road corridors have both been the scenes of prior shootings. In a separate earlier incident, PGPD officers responding to the 7900 block of Riggs Road, the same general area where Monday's suspect was detained, found 16-year-old Kevin Ruiz Campos of Silver Spring dead in an apartment parking lot; a second adult male victim was hospitalized in critical condition. One block from Monday's shooting, a prior incident on the 7300 block of 18th Avenue left an adult male with multiple gunshot wounds, transported as a Priority 2 call, conscious and breathing.
Langley Park has no municipal government of its own; all public safety services run through Prince George's County, headquartered in Upper Marlboro. Its 2026 estimated population of approximately 22,819 is up 17.7% from 19,391 in the 2020 Census. About 83.3% of residents identify as Hispanic, and roughly 66.3%, approximately 14,300 people, were born outside the United States, a foreign-born share more than double the 24% average across the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area. Over 70% of residents are first-generation immigrants, and more than 86% of that group traces roots to Central America, principally Guatemala and El Salvador.
Those demographics shaped a federal response. The Local Initiatives Support Corporation designated Langley Park a Building Community Coalitions Initiative target area in 2015 because of documented gang-related violence, drug crimes, and violent crime. CASA de Maryland served as fiscal agent for the resulting SOMOS Langley Park program, with Howard University's Center for Urban Progress as the research partner. LISC data shows overall crime in the area has declined since 2010, but calls for service, including assaults, rapes, burglaries, and thefts, have remained persistently high. Across the county, total crime costs are projected at approximately $701 million in 2025, or roughly $678 per resident.
