Two Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving School Bus in Upper Marlboro
Two people were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash involving a Prince George’s County school bus at the Route 4 and Ritchie Marlboro Road intersection, underscoring local traffic-safety concerns.
Two people were taken to the hospital after a multi-vehicle crash that involved a Prince George’s County Public Schools bus in Upper Marlboro Thursday afternoon, county firefighters and school officials said. Crews responded to a rescue call around 1:30 p.m. to the area of Route 4 and Ritchie Marlboro Road, where the bus and a passenger vehicle had veered off the roadway and the bus was found on the side of the road.
Prince George’s County Public Schools issued a statement describing how the collision occurred: "A Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) school bus was traveling southbound on Ritchie Marlboro Road at about 1:30 p.m. today to begin its afternoon route. As the bus approached the intersection leading to the Pennsylvania Avenue ramp, a passenger vehicle failed to stop at a posted stop sign, causing the bus to hit the vehicle. Subsequently, both vehicles veered off the roadway. The accident wasn’t weather-related.
No children were on the bus at the time of the accident; the driver was the sole occupant. There were three occupants in the car. None of the individuals involved [was] seriously injured, but they were taken to the hospital for further evaluation as a precautionary measure."
Prince George’s County Fire Department personnel confirmed emergency responders found a multi-vehicle crash on arrival and that no children were aboard the school bus. The fire department reported that two people were hospitalized; PGCPS emphasized that those taken for evaluation were not seriously injured. Authorities have identified the passenger vehicle’s failure to stop at a posted stop sign as the proximate cause, and the matter remains under investigation.

For Upper Marlboro residents, the crash highlights risks at the Route 4 and Ritchie Marlboro Road area, including the ramp to Pennsylvania Avenue where the collision occurred. The presence of a school bus operating on its afternoon route, even without students aboard, raises questions about intersection control and driver compliance with stop signs during school-run periods.
Prince George’s County Police and the fire department have not released additional details on citations, impairment, or the names and receiving hospitals of those transported. Investigators will review dispatch logs, crash reports, and any available camera footage to determine fault and whether charges or traffic enforcement actions will follow.
Expect follow-up updates from county authorities as the investigation proceeds. In the near term, drivers and families who use the corridor around Ritchie Marlboro Road and the Pennsylvania Avenue ramp should be alert to possible temporary traffic controls and to local reporting for confirmations on injuries and any enforcement outcomes.
