At least one victim was found trapped beneath an overturned vehicle when emergency crews reached Highway 6 in western Quitman County on Thursday afternoon, a wreck that killed one person and required two medical helicopters to transport the most critically injured to regional trauma centers.

The Coahoma County Fire Department received a mutual-aid request from Quitman County just after 4:00 p.m. on April 2. CCFD firefighters found multiple patients with life-threatening injuries and worked alongside Quitman County responders to stabilize victims and establish landing zones for two air medical helicopters. Despite life-saving measures performed at the scene, one victim was pronounced dead. At least two others were airlifted. The identities of all those involved have not been publicly released.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, which will include scene reconstruction, vehicle examinations, witness interviews, and toxicology testing where applicable. MHP said the investigation remained active and asked anyone traveling through the area around 4:00 p.m. on April 2 who captured dashcam or other video footage to contact the agency directly.

Thursday's crash is at least the second fatal incident on Highway 6 in Quitman County in less than twelve months. In June 2025, MHP investigated a crash at the intersection of Highway 6 and Tutor Road, near Marks, where a child was killed and two adults were moderately injured after a Chevrolet Tahoe heading south on Tutor Road struck a Ford Escape traveling east on the highway.

The two-lane corridor carries a mix of commuters, regional freight, and Delta farm equipment, a combination that compresses a driver's margin for error on stretches with narrow shoulders and limited passing zones. The speed differential between a pickup hauling a trailer and slower-moving agricultural machinery is among the conditions MHP investigators will weigh as they reconstruct Thursday's scene.

The mutual-aid call to Coahoma County underscores a structural reality in the Delta: Quitman County, with a population under 8,000, does not maintain the emergency depth of larger neighboring counties. That interagency coordination, and the speed with which two helicopters were put into service, likely determined outcomes for the survivors who were flown out.

MHP's completed crash report will identify probable cause and contributing factors, including speed, seatbelt use, and road conditions. Those findings will carry weight for any legal proceedings and will inform whether county officials and the Mississippi Department of Transportation move forward with safety improvements on this stretch of the highway. Anyone with footage from the crash scene should contact the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
