Rakow MS Orchestra Director Zoe Rheus Wins 2026 TODA Young Educator Award
Rakow MS orchestra director Zoe Rheus was named 2026 TODA Young Educator of the Year by peers statewide, even as her program fundraises for basics like replacement strings and tuners.

Peer orchestra directors across Texas named Ursula Rakow Middle School's Zoe Rheus the 2026 Texas Orchestra Directors Association (TODA) Young Educator of the Year, the field's highest statewide honor for directors with ten or fewer years of experience, while the program she leads is simultaneously crowdfunding for replacement strings, student tuners, double bass stools, and new music.
TODA presents the award each year to a Texas orchestra director who "exemplifies excellence in teaching and elevates the profession through their commitment to students and orchestral education in Texas." Rheus was nominated by peers throughout the state for "demonstrating exceptional versatility and commitment to students at every level," according to Rockwall ISD. She will receive the award at the TODA summer convention in July in San Antonio.
The recognition carries practical weight beyond the award itself. Honors like TODA's Young Educator prize spotlight effective instruction in arts education and help districts recruit and retain talented educators. At the state level, recognition raises an orchestra program's profile, can draw more students into the program, and strengthens future applications for arts funding and grants, implications the district highlighted in its own announcement.
At Rakow MS, sixth graders select orchestra from four fine arts options alongside band, choir, and visual arts, with seventh- and eighth-grade students able to take multiple arts courses. The orchestra program has an active crowdfunding campaign seeking community donations for equipment, with an explicit goal of keeping "young musicians playing in harmony" and building what the program describes as "a strong foundation."

Rockwall ISD published its announcement on March 24. For parents and community advocates, the award provides a concrete credential when making the case for fine arts funding before the school board, and it gives Rakow MS a statewide proof point for families weighing fine arts options as students enter sixth grade.
Rheus will be formally honored among orchestra educators from across Texas at the TODA summer convention in San Antonio this July.
