Rockwall County backs veterans memorial effort to honor local service members

Rockwall County is asking residents to put names in stone, with a $60 engraved brick tied to a proposed memorial brick garden and an invitation to honor a veteran, an active-duty service member, someone listed as MIA or KIA, or a loved one. The county’s message opens with a direct appeal: “Some heroes never asked for recognition. They simply answered the call to serve.”

The effort sits inside the Rockwall County Veterans Memorial Foundation, which says its mission is to honor the sacrifices of local veterans and create a lasting memorial that educates and inspires future generations. The foundation’s public face gives the project a practical path for participation, not just recognition, by offering engraved bricks for the garden and using the county’s news feed to reach residents who want to support the memorial in a tangible way.

County leaders have already put money behind the project. The Rockwall County Commissioners Court voted 5-0 on March 24 to provide a one-time $10,000 contribution for concrete pads for the proposed memorial brick garden. The foundation is handling the engraved bricks and installation, making the county’s contribution a narrow but important piece of the buildout while private purchases drive the visible memorial itself.

Rockwall County’s existing Veterans Memorial, dedicated Nov. 11, 2011, gives the new foundation effort a clear backdrop in the county’s veteran-recognition history. County records also show continued attention to the site: a 2026 commissioners court presentation on veterans memorial repair and renovation signals that the memorial remains an active county concern, not a finished project left on its own.

The county’s Veterans Services Office is located directly in front of the Rockwall County Courthouse at 1101 E Yellowjacket Lane, Suite 125, Rockwall, which places veteran services and memorial work at the center of county operations. The foundation’s sponsors page thanks the Alamo Letter Society as an inaugural sponsor, showing the project already has outside support as it seeks more names, more bricks and more families willing to see a relative remembered publicly in Rockwall County.
