Rockwall County warns drivers of I-30, FM 35 construction closures next week

Drivers crossing the Lake Ray Hubbard corridor should expect slower trips as Rockwall County pushes another round of construction through Interstate 30, FM 548, FM 3549 and FM 35. The June 7-13 schedule concentrates work where daily commuters already funnel through tight merges and frontage-road turns, making the interruptions more than routine lane changes as summer travel builds toward the July 4 holiday.

The biggest pinch point is an overnight eastbound left-lane closure on I-30 between FM 548 and FM 2642, which is set to run June 7 through June 13. FM 548 will be flagged northbound and southbound at Pond Branch from June 8 through June 13, and both directions of the FM 3549 U-turn are scheduled for bridge-related closures as needed. Frontage roads on both sides of I-30 are also affected in multiple stretches, including the eastbound frontage road from FM 3549 to Erby Campbell Road, the westbound frontage road from FM 35 to Erby Campbell Road, the eastbound frontage road from Erby Campbell Road to FM 35, and the westbound frontage road from Erby Campbell Road to FM 3549. Those are the places where delays are most likely to stack up during morning and evening peaks, especially near the interchange.

The week ends with a full overnight closure of FM 35 northbound and southbound at I-30 from Friday night into Saturday, June 13. Rockwall County said that closure is needed to install a drainage crossing. The county also said contractor crews will coordinate with EMS, fire and police so emergency access can be maintained when necessary, a detail that matters when work lands at one of the county’s busiest connector points.

The latest closures are part of a much larger I-30 rebuild. Rockwall County says its construction-updates page is meant to keep citizens informed as the County Commissioners, County Judge and consulting team work to secure funding, complete preliminary design and move transportation improvements forward, including projects supported by federal and state dollars. The City of Rockwall says the I-30 expansion will widen the highway from Bass Pro Drive to the Hunt County line and add continuous frontage roads across Lake Ray Hubbard, because the current setup cannot handle congestion and population growth.

TxDOT’s Rockwall County projects list puts the I-30 work from Dalrock Road to SH 205 at $313 million, with construction scheduled from March 2023 through July 2027. Another segment from SH 205 to west of FM 2642 is listed at $348 million, running from September 2023 through December 2027.

Rockwall County said in an October 23, 2025 update that bridges east of Ben Payne to FM 2642 were being widened from two main lanes to three in both directions, along with the frontage roads, and that the eastbound frontage-road bridge was not expected to be in use until late 2026 or early 2027. The county’s own growth numbers show why the pressure keeps building: U.S. Census Bureau estimates put Rockwall County at 140,738 residents on July 1, 2025, up from 107,819 in the 2020 census.
