Rockwall County warns residents about scam calls and fake sheriff site

Rockwall County officials warned residents about scam calls that impersonate legitimate officials and businesses. Scammers had built a fake Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office website with fake phone numbers and a .org domain.

Fraudsters often pose as legitimate monitoring or law-enforcement agencies to demand payment. Deputies do not instruct anyone to pay fines or fees with cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, gift cards or wire transfers. The scam tactics are built around fear and urgency, with callers trying to keep residents on the line long enough to pressure them into sending money through cryptocurrency kiosks, Bitcoin ATMs or digital wallets.

When a call sounds official, the safest move is to hang up and call back using a publicly listed number, not the number that appeared on the screen. Caller ID can be spoofed, and residents should verify a caller independently before taking action. Scammers impersonating government entities may use phone calls or texts to demand money.

Collin County has issued its own alert about fake calls from law enforcement and other county officials, and Marshall police have warned residents about scammers impersonating officers and using spoofing technology. A real deputy will not ask for payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency. In a Dec. 5, 2025 Facebook post, the office said, “The phone scammers are still hitting hard...”

Rockwall County residents who get a suspicious call should stop the conversation, avoid sharing personal information and check the agency through its known public contact information before acting.
