The Marine Corps JROTC program at Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy gathered cadets, parents, and community sponsors Thursday evening for its annual awards ceremony, recognizing the young leaders who have shaped the program since it launched at the Rockwall ISD campus in the 2024-2025 school year.

The ceremony at the academy, located at 2301 S. John King Blvd., celebrated cadets who demonstrated exceptional discipline, academic performance, and leadership potential through the program. Community sponsors played a visible role in the event; the MCJROTC program structures its sponsorships across multiple tiers, with business partners receiving recognition in the awards banquet program and on the annual sponsorship banner displayed at all Rockwall MCJROTC events throughout the year.

The program, led by Commander Earley, has drawn growing community investment since its first year. One of its most notable recent achievements came when cadet Quinn Putchinski was awarded the prestigious Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship, a highly competitive honor valued at $200,000 available at more than 50 colleges and universities nationwide.

The annual ceremony follows a year of milestones for the program. In November 2025, Rockwall ISD dedicated the James Randolph Jr. Marine Corps JROTC Hall at the academy, honoring the decorated Marine Corps veteran and former Rockwall High School principal who led the campus from an "Acceptable" to an "Exemplary" rating during his decade as principal from 1994 to 2004.

Thursday's ceremony underscored the trajectory of a program that is still in its early years but has already produced a scholarship recipient earning a six-figure award and a dedicated hall bearing the name of one of the county's most respected military veterans.
