Rockwall plans downtown parade, park festivities for Founders Day

The downtown parade starts at 11 a.m., and by dusk the fireworks are at Harry Myers Park, where Founders Day has no on-site parking and July 4 brings street closures near the park. Start downtown in the morning, use the shuttle or trolley instead of hunting for a spot, then shift to Harry Myers Park for the evening show.

Start downtown before the crowds build

The easiest way to handle Rockwall’s Founders Day format is to treat downtown as the daytime hub. Rockwall’s Founders Day festival is a free, family-friendly celebration of the city’s 172nd birthday on Saturday, May 16, with the Rockwall Farmers Market running from 8 a.m. to noon and a wine walk sponsored by the Downtown Association from noon to 4 p.m. For Independence Day, the patriotic parade starts at 11 a.m.

That timing matters if you want a shorter walk, quicker parking turnover, and an easier way to eat without paying park prices. Downtown Rockwall gets the first wave of foot traffic from the farmers market, then the wine walk, then the parade, which means the restaurants and shops around the square are positioned for the heaviest daytime traffic before the evening crowd shifts to Harry Myers Park.

Harry Myers Park is the evening anchor

Once the event moves to Harry Myers Park, the schedule gets much busier and much more family-focused. Founders Day park activities run from 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and include bounce houses, live animal shows, vendor activities, a rock climbing wall, and food trucks, with park family activities running from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. before the later entertainment begins.

The July 4 schedule uses the same park-centered pattern. The city’s June 2025 newsletter lists Harry Myers Park celebrations starting at 5 p.m., and families are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, food, and drinks for the night. Fill up earlier in the day, bring your own seating, and plan to stay put once the evening crowd arrives.

Parking is the part to plan first

The official Founders Day parking map shows no on-site parking at Harry Myers Park. Shuttle buses and trolley service run from 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, with shuttle and trolley pick-up and drop-off points near East Washington Street and Aluminum Plant Road. The same map marks Howard Dobbs Elementary as parking unavailable and includes Uber and Lyft pick-up and drop-off areas.

For July 4, E. Washington Street closes from Park Place Boulevard to Airport Road beginning at 2:30 p.m., and there is no parking or drop-offs at Harry Myers Park. Arrive before the road closures tighten, then use the shuttle system or plan for a drop-off well away from the park entrance if you are coming later in the day.

Know the busiest hours before you leave home

The strongest crowd pressure falls in three windows: the 11 a.m. parade, the 5 p.m. park opening, and dusk when fireworks begin. Parachute jumpers and live music by the Diamond West Band are also set for 7 p.m., which should concentrate another surge of visitors in and around Harry Myers Park just before dark.

If you are trying to move through the day without long waits, the best bargain is timing. Downtown before noon gives you the market and wine walk with less congestion; the afternoon gives families bounce houses, the rock climbing wall, and vendor stalls before the evening rush; and the park after 5 p.m. gives you the food trucks, music, and fireworks in one place without needing to move again.

Fireworks viewing and the park rules to remember

Rockwall’s Independence Day page promises the night ends “with a bang” at Harry Myers Park, and fireworks are at dusk. Get to the park early enough to claim a comfortable spot, then stay with your chairs and blankets through the musical and parachute-jump portion of the evening.

One rule stands out for anyone packing a picnic: no glass containers are allowed at the park activities. It affects drinks, salad containers, and any food brought from home. If you want to keep the outing easy and economical, use cans, plastic, or reusable containers instead of glass and bring only what you can carry through a crowded park.

Where the local spending tends to land

Rockwall’s schedule funnels spending into two places. Downtown gets the early money through the Rockwall Farmers Market, the wine walk, and the 11 a.m. parade crowd, while Harry Myers Park gets the later money through food trucks, vendor activities, and the families who stay through fireworks. That setup gives downtown merchants the first strong window of the day and park vendors the strongest evening window.

A 2024 city press release described the Fourth of July celebration as a full day of family-friendly activities, and the newer city pages continue that same pattern of an early downtown start, a mid-day transition, and a park-based finale at dusk.
