Driver Killed After Vehicle Goes Over Barrier on Route 1
A single-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Brunswick on the evening of Jan. 2 left a Woolwich man dead after his SUV left the roadway and fell from a bridge. The collision closed an onramp and reduced traffic for hours, highlighting winter driving hazards and raising questions about onramp safety and maintenance in Sagadahoc County.

At about 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, the Brunswick Police Department responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 1 near the Route 196 ramp that resulted in the death of the driver, according to a release from Brunswick Chief of Police Scott J. Stewart. The driver was identified as Shannon MacGregor, 47, of Woolwich. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined MacGregor was driving a Dodge Journey up the Route 196 onramp toward Route 1 northbound when the vehicle left its lane as it went over the bridge. The car mounted an icy embankment, went over a barrier and fell to the ground below. The Brunswick Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is conducting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
Responders located a dog inside the vehicle and transported the animal to emergency veterinary services; the dog is expected to make a full recovery. The Route 196 onramp was temporarily closed and traffic on northbound Route 1 was reduced to one lane for several hours while emergency and investigative work proceeded.
Multiple local and state agencies provided assistance at the scene, including the Topsham Police, Freeport Police, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, Brunswick Fire Department and Maine Department of Transportation. The coordinated response underscores the logistical challenges of highway incidents on major regional corridors and the interagency work required to clear scenes and restore traffic flow.
Beyond the immediate human toll, the crash spotlights winter driving conditions and infrastructure design where local roads merge with higher-speed state routes. Icy embankments and the ability of safety barriers to contain vehicles are central questions for investigators. Findings from the Crash Reconstruction Unit could inform MaineDOT winter maintenance decisions, signage or barrier improvements at the Route 196 onramp and similar locations across Sagadahoc County.
For residents who use Route 1 and the Route 196 connector, the collision serves as a reminder of seasonal road risks and the importance of municipal and state coordination on road maintenance and safety measures. The Brunswick Police Department continues to investigate the crash and has not released additional findings as the reconstruction work continues.
