49ers lineman Keion White shot in ankle in Mission District, undergoes surgery
Keion White, a 49ers defensive lineman, was shot in the ankle in the Mission District and underwent surgery; the shooting raises renewed concerns about public safety after a major event.

Keion White, 27, was shot in the ankle early Monday morning in San Francisco’s Mission District and was taken to a hospital for surgery, the San Francisco 49ers and local authorities said. The team said White “was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco. He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”
San Francisco police responded to the 1700 block of Mission Street at around 4:06 a.m. and found a victim with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided aid and paramedics transported White to a hospital, police and media outlets reported. The San Francisco Police Department said, “A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business. The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect. All information is preliminary at this time, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.” No arrests had been reported as of the latest updates.
Local coverage cited a report that the incident occurred at Dahlia’s, a bar and nightclub on Mission Street, and that White was hosting a party during which an argument involving rapper Lil Baby was alleged. That detail was reported by the San Francisco Standard and carried by local television coverage; police have described only a verbal altercation inside a business and have not confirmed the specific venue or individuals involved.
The shooting happened hours after the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, an event White attended. White posted a photo from the Super Bowl on social media earlier Monday, and fans reacted with messages of support after news of the shooting circulated, local outlets reported. The 49ers said the injury is not considered career threatening; one local report called his surgery successful.
White was acquired by the 49ers in a trade on Oct. 29, when San Francisco sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to New England for White and a 2026 seventh-round selection. For the 49ers this season he appeared in 11 games, started two, and recorded 16 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and three tackles for loss. Across his NFL career White has played in 47 games with 20 starts and was the 46th overall pick in the 2023 draft.
The shooting is the second high-profile incident involving a 49ers player in San Francisco in 18 months, following the August 2024 shooting of wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. The recurrence has heightened neighborhood concern about gun violence at late-night venues and the safety of public spaces after major events. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie posted on social media, “Any violent incident in our city is unacceptable, and I'm hoping Keion recovers quickly. I've spoken with SFPD and 49ers leadership- we are all grateful to our SFPD officers for their quick response. As always, I will continue working with San Francisco law enforcement to ensure our neighborhoods and our residents are safe.”
For Mission District residents and visitors this episode underscores questions about security at nightlife venues, emergency response after large events, and how city agencies and private businesses coordinate to prevent and respond to violence. The investigation by SFPD is ongoing; authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward and said further updates will be released as the probe develops.
