Power outage hits Mission Bay, downtown San Francisco before July Fourth weekend

Power went out near Costco, Mission Bay and Showplace Square, cutting service to more than 2,400 PG&E customers in a dense slice of central San Francisco before the July Fourth weekend. Service was restored by Friday morning, but the outage hit a corridor where retail, housing, offices and industrial remnants sit side by side.

Costco’s San Francisco warehouse is at 450 10th St., a busy stop for shoppers and delivery traffic, and the store has anchored that block since opening on Nov. 18, 1993. Nearby Mission Bay has a daily population of about 3,500 faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors spread across UCSF’s teaching, research and clinical-care campus. UCSF Health’s Mission Bay campus also includes hospitals for children, women and cancer patients, plus outpatient specialty care, a pediatric emergency department and a birth center.

Showplace Square is a center for home and office furnishings, interior designers, furniture makers, retail stores and small shops. A power loss there can reach businesses that depend on steady electricity for computers, refrigeration and customer service as much as homes depend on lights and internet access.

PG&E’s outage center showed 99.9% of customers with power and 69 current outages affecting 1,020 customers as of July 2 at 8:47 a.m. PDT. It also listed another recent San Francisco outage affecting more than 3,500 customers on a Wednesday after several smaller interruptions in recent days.

In December 2025, a fire at a PG&E substation near Mission Street and 8th and Mission left about 130,000 customers without power at its peak, before the final 3,800 were due to be restored by 6 a.m. Tuesday. Another late-December outage left 11,206 households without power after an overhead equipment failure and a transformer fire at 12th and Balboa.
