San Francisco Declares March Iranian American Heritage Month at City Hall Ceremony
City Hall filled with Iranian Americans and city leaders on March 19 as San Francisco officially designated March as Iranian American Heritage Month, timed to Nowruz.

Beneath the rotunda of San Francisco City Hall on a Wednesday evening, Iranian American community members gathered alongside Mayor Daniel Lurie and city officials to mark Resolution 260219, formally designating March 2026 as Iranian American Heritage Month in the City and County of San Francisco.
The Board of Supervisors had taken up the resolution twice before passage, with appearances on March 3 and March 10. The resolution acknowledges Iranian American contributions across social, economic, scientific, artistic, and civic spheres, and specifically notes U.S. Congress's support for the designation. The Board also called on residents and organizations to celebrate through cultural, educational, business, and civic programs throughout the month.
The ceremony landed at a charged moment. The designation had been in the works before the recent war in Iran, but community members at City Hall said the formal acknowledgment from the city carries particular weight right now. The timing also coincided with Nowruz preparations across the Bay Area, with the Persian New Year falling just days after the ceremony.
Masha Hakimi, an Iranian American and commissioner on San Francisco's Commission on Community and Investment and Infrastructure, spoke to that weight directly. "The designation of a heritage month is a significant act of official recognition that validates the history, culture, and social contributions of our community, who has been part of the fabric of this country and this city for the last 5 decades," she said.

With Nowruz approaching that Friday, Hakimi addressed the emotional complexity facing the Iranian American community. "As we start observing Nowruz this Friday, we are all navigating a very emotionally difficult journey," she said. "I invite us to seize the moment, to step into our daily life, in this place we call home, standing on the core ethical principles on our proud ancient Iranian heritage."
Hakimi added that organizers intend to make Iranian American Heritage Month an annual observance in San Francisco, extending the recognition beyond this single legislative cycle. The resolution itself frames Nowruz as a tradition symbolizing renewal, a framing that carried extra resonance for those gathered at City Hall as the Persian New Year arrived amid an uncertain moment for the diaspora.
