A quiet residential block in San Francisco's Sunset District became a homicide scene Tuesday night after a woman was shot at a home on the 2200 block of 22nd Avenue, between Rivera and Santiago streets, and later died at a hospital. The shooting was one of two fatal incidents that struck the city within minutes of each other.

San Francisco Police officers responded to the 2200 block of 22nd Avenue regarding a shooting at approximately 10:43 p.m. on March 24. Upon arrival, officers located an adult female victim suffering from a gunshot wound and rendered aid; paramedics then arrived and transported her to a local hospital for her life-threatening injuries. Despite the lifesaving efforts of first responders and medical staff, the victim was declared deceased at the hospital. Her identity had not been released as of Wednesday.

A man, who was not immediately identified, allegedly shot the woman, killing her, as nearby residents looked on from a distance while their usually quiet neighborhood was flooded with numerous police cars and fire trucks. Police set up crime scene tape around what appeared to be a pool of blood on the sidewalk. The male suspect is in custody, police said. Preliminary information from investigators suggests the discharge may not have been intentional, though that characterization has not been confirmed by a named SFPD spokesperson or the District Attorney's Office. Both agencies are investigating.

The San Francisco Homicide Detail responded to the scene to take over the investigation.

The shooting on 22nd Avenue was not an isolated tragedy that night. Just two minutes earlier, at 10:43 p.m., a man was found shot in the 1800 block of Sunnydale Avenue in the Sunnydale public housing neighborhood and died of his injuries at a hospital. The two deaths marked a grim parallel: two San Franciscans fatally shot on opposite sides of the city within the same two-minute window.

San Francisco police have reported 12 homicides in 2026; at the same point last year, there were three. Oakland has reported 14 homicides this year, and San Jose seven. SFPD noted a 20% drop in homicides in 2025, with 28 total, the lowest number since 1954. The trajectory in 2026 represents a sharp departure from that milestone.

The investigation remains open and active. Anyone with information is asked to contact SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411, beginning the message with "SFPD." Tips may be submitted anonymously.
