Five workers cleaning up a site north of Aztec were confronted by a Bloomfield woman who investigators say pulled a gun from a Chevrolet Tahoe and fired at least one round toward them and another into the air. Jasmil Guadalupe Arroyo, 35, now faces four counts of aggravated assault and one count of negligent use of a deadly weapon, and no injuries were reported.

Deputies with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene at 8:41 a.m. April 9 on County Road 3403, north of Aztec, the county seat. Investigators found two shell casings at the job site after the shooting call came in, and a neighbor’s video was turned over to deputies as part of the case file.

According to the probable cause statement, Arroyo and her boyfriend, Aldren Hot, 38, of Flora Vista, drove to the worksite after Hot had been told not to report there. The statement says Arroyo got out of the Chevrolet Tahoe, pulled a firearm and fired toward the workers. Det. Avery Washburn said Arroyo pointed her right arm toward the victims as they scattered. In her statement to investigators, Arroyo reportedly said she fired into the ground and admitted she had already fired at least two shots earlier that morning.

Arroyo was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center at 12:16 p.m. April 9 under docket number 2026-00002862. Jail records list a total bond amount of $0.00 and a bail amount of $0.00. Hot was also booked and faces aggravated DWI, driving without a license and open container charges, all misdemeanors. He was additionally wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in a misdemeanor driving-without-a-license case.

A preliminary hearing for Arroyo and Hot is set for April 23 in San Juan County Magistrate Court in Aztec. That hearing will be the next major step as prosecutors decide how to proceed with the felony assault counts tied to the alleged shooting.

The case landed in a county of 121,661 people, according to the 2020 census, where a confrontation at a work site can spread quickly through the tight network of workers, contractors and law enforcement that serves Aztec and the surrounding communities.
