Combs, McCormick sweep opening weekend at Aztec Speedway
Packed stands greeted Aztec Speedway’s season opener as R.C. Combs and Nicky McCormick swept their divisions in a two-night launch.
Packed grandstands and a two-night feature program gave Aztec Speedway the start San Juan County dirt-track fans had been waiting for, as R.C. Combs and Nicky McCormick swept their divisions Friday and Saturday at the 420 Legion Road oval in Aztec. The opening weekend marked the first racing action at the track since the 2025 season stalled shortly before Memorial Day, when it was still in the early phase of its 73rd season.
The opener put seven divisions on the card and gave a first look at the classes likely to shape the summer schedule. IMCA Northern SportMod drew the largest field with 10 entries, followed by nine IMCA Modifieds. IMCA Hobby Stock, IMCA Sport Compact and Dwarf/Mod Lite each listed seven entries, IMCA Stock Car brought six, and Youth Sport Compacts had three. Combs took both IMCA Stock Car mains, while McCormick won both Youth Sport Compact features.
The rest of the weekend spread the checkered flags across the field. Brody Spangler won Friday’s IMCA Northern SportMod feature and Tyke Miles won Saturday’s. Regan Tafoya captured Friday’s IMCA Modified main, with Rob Moseley taking Saturday’s. Kyler Duggins and Hunter Ferrell split the IMCA Hobby Stock wins, Dave Rogers and John Frans split the Sport Compact features, and Michael Phay and John Foster split the Dwarf/Mod Lite victories. That mix of repeat winners and rotating front-runners gave the opening card a competitive feel from start to finish.
Aztec Speedway entered 2026 after significant facility work that included upgraded grandstand seating, updated billboard signage and new clay overlays on the racing surface. The track’s 2026 materials describe it as a place with 74 years of dirt-track racing tradition in the Four Corners region, and the format documents say most of the staff are volunteers. The season now moves toward another program Friday, May 29, then a $1,000-to-win SportMod special on June 13, with fan appreciation night set for Sept. 18. For a track that lost momentum last spring, the opening weekend offered a clear sign that Aztec Speedway is trying to reclaim its place as a San Juan County weekend destination.
