Farmington Police have released bodycam and dashcam video showing officers rescuing a man from a burning car after a late-night street-race crash that injured two and reignited warnings about reckless driving. The collision happened around 11:40 p.m. on September 26 along East 20th Street near Knudsen Avenue, directly in front of Smith’s Food & Drug. An officer observed a white Dodge Charger and a red Toyota Supra racing side-by-side.
When police attempted to stop them, the Charger sped off, lost control, hit another vehicle, rolled, and burst into flames. Officers pulled the 20-year-old passenger to safety while the 27-year-old driver escaped on his own.
Both were taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. No bystanders were hurt. The Supra’s driver, 22-year-old Kalynn Kenworthy, stopped at the scene and was arrested. Police charged her under New Mexico Statute 66-8-115 for racing on highways and careless driving.
Court records show Kenworthy had previous speeding citations, including one earlier this year in August. Police released the video on October 1 to highlight the life-threatening risks of street racing. “Street racing is dangerous, illegal, and puts lives at risk,” the department said in a statement. Chief Steve Hebbe added that such behavior has been a persistent local problem for two decades: “It’s kind of in the fabric of Farmington.
We’re never going to stop crashes, but we can reduce how serious they are by reducing speeds.” The incident underscores continuing safety concerns along one of Farmington’s busiest roads, lined with businesses and heavy night traffic.
Authorities urge residents to report racing or reckless driving by calling dispatch at (505) 334-6622 or through the Farmington PD app.
