Farmington police executing a search warrant at a Copper Avenue residence found a concealed compartment - described as a hidden closet behind sheetrock - containing multiple firearms and large quantities of ammunition. The search, tied to an armed-robbery investigation, was carried out on Jan. 30, 2026, and remains an active matter for investigators.

The discovery has alarmed neighbors in the surrounding blocks, where parents and residents said the idea of weapons hidden inside a family home is unsettling. Farmington police have not released the names of occupants, the exact inventory recovered, or whether the weapons are linked directly to the armed-robbery under investigation. Officials say the evidence will be part of ongoing inquiries and that charging decisions rest with prosecutors as investigators complete property inventories and forensic work.

The Farmington search joins a broader pattern of concerns about firearms concealed in private homes, including cases that involve children. In a separate federal matter in Texas, prosecutors reported that a February 14, 2024 search of a felon’s residence yielded weapons hidden in a 12-year-old’s bedroom. “On Feb. 14, 2024, law enforcement searched the felon's home and found a Model Halloween-15, multi-caliber pistol under the 12-year-old's mattress and other items in the boy's closet,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Texas said. “Among those items, they found three firearms, about 184 rounds of ammunition, three 30‑round high capacity rifle magazines and one rifle scope.”

That Texas defendant, Miguel Angel Ferreyro Jr., 34, pleaded guilty on June 20, 2024, to possessing ammunition and firearm charges and was later sentenced to 37 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Prosecutors noted Ferreyro had a 2022 conviction for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana, which made him legally prohibited from possessing weapons or ammunition. Investigators there also reported phone evidence showing instructions to a minor to hide weapons, including at least one loaded firearm.

For Farmington residents, the immediate concerns are safety, the welfare of any children in the household, and whether weapons recovered were used in other crimes. Neighbors say Copper Avenue is a tight-knit block where news of a hidden compartment has prompted renewed discussion about secure storage and reporting suspicious activity. Local law enforcement has urged anyone with information about the armed-robbery investigation to come forward to improve case outcomes and community safety.

What comes next in Farmington is procedural: investigators must complete inventories, prosecutors must review the file, and any charges would move through local courts. The discovery of a concealed closet with firearms underscores the local stakes in investigations that intersect with child welfare, public safety, and the legal consequences for prohibited possessors. Residents should expect updates as Farmington police and the district attorney determine whether to file charges and release more detailed information.
