Mayor Gregg Hull told KOB the city is preparing to break ground on Phase 2 of the Broadmoor Senior Center in Rio Rancho, a move he framed as a direct response to growing demand from the center’s membership and walk-ins. The expansion will add a 2,600 sq. ft. multipurpose room intended for pickleball and other activities, an outdoor terrace with more shade, and, across different reports, additional storage, parking and outdoor recreational space for seniors who already use the facility.

Hull described the project as “a little over $1.6 million,” saying “the bulk of that came from federal and state grants that we are putting right into the project, and about $400,000 came out of our general funds. So we were able to budget some capital since this is a onetime expenditure on a facility build, we were able to set that money aside.” The mayor said the investment is intended to expand programming, noting, “It is a great facility, and we are looking forward to expanding it, and it is going to really allow us to expand services that we are able to offer our seniors in our community.”

KOB reported the city is drawing up contracts with the contractor and expects to start construction soon; Hull estimated that once work begins, “it should take about nine months to complete.” That timeline contrasts with an earlier brief that described Phase 2 construction as “approaching completion.” The two accounts differ on status; KOB’s coverage includes on-the-record budget and scope details from the mayor and the city’s description that contracts are still being prepared.

The Broadmoor Senior Center opened four years ago and, according to KOB, has “served thousands of senior citizens” while building a membership that now exceeds 1,000 members in addition to walk-ins. Current programming at the center includes bingo and ceramic painting; city leaders and center staff say the new multipurpose room will enable pickleball scheduling and more structured recreational options for seniors across Rio Rancho.

Hull also addressed operations during construction, advising members not to be deterred by visible work on site: “People don’t be discouraged because you see construction trucks or a little construction tape come on in, the staff here is still going to make sure you have a great time while you’re here.” The city’s stated plan pairs the indoor multipurpose space with outdoor improvements, terrace and shade, aimed at expanding year-round use.

Budget, contract awards, permit filings and firm start dates remain matters the city will finalize as contracts are completed. KOB’s report includes an accessibility note: Any person with disabilities who needs help accessing the content of the FCC Public File may contact KOB via their online form or call 505-243-4411.
