Cleveland Storm Past La Cueva for Rio Rancho Softball Championship
Cleveland entered Saturday unbeaten and left with the hardware, defeating La Cueva to take the Rio Rancho softball championship in front of a home-field crowd.

The Cleveland Storm arrived at Rio Rancho High School on Saturday afternoon carrying an unbeaten record and the weight of a marquee rivalry matchup, then delivered the result their season had been building toward: a championship-game victory over the La Cueva Bears to claim the Rio Rancho softball title.
Cleveland had rolled through the tournament bracket without a loss, including a first-round display that featured a 12-run inning as the Storm and the host Rams each overpowered their early opponents. La Cueva was no easy out by the time Saturday's 3 p.m. final arrived. The Bears had surged through their half of the draw, bringing an offense that had been among the most dangerous in the state all week long. La Cueva came into this tournament as three-time defending APS Metro champions, a streak that ended just last weekend when fourth-seeded Volcano Vista shocked the Bears 11-1 in the Metro final. That loss made Saturday's tournament title at Rio Rancho the Bears' most immediate shot at a statement win, and the urgency showed.
Cleveland's pitching staff had been the story of the week. Senior ace Julia Montoya, who has signed to pitch at the college level, was central to the Storm keeping opponents at bay throughout the bracket. Against a La Cueva lineup that had put up 14 runs on No. 3-seeded Rio Rancho in the Metro semifinal just days earlier, that kind of arm-side production mattered in the final innings.
The championship carries stakes beyond a Saturday trophy. With the state playoffs on the horizon, seeding conversations in Class 5A will reflect performances in high-profile tournaments like this one. Cleveland's unbeaten run through a field that included a battle-tested La Cueva squad strengthens the Storm's case for a top seed when the bracket forms.
Elsewhere at the Rio Rancho tournament, Kirtland Central picked up a notable 9-8 win over Hobbs, one of the weekend's tighter finishes in a field that featured competitive programs from across the state.
For Cleveland, the result gives the Storm something no tournament result had offered La Cueva in three years: the Rio Rancho title.
