Fatal Crash at NM 528 and Corrales Road Kills One, Injures Two
One person was killed and two hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash Saturday at NM 528 and Corrales Road, shutting down northbound lanes for hours.

A two-vehicle collision at the intersection of NM 528 and Corrales Road Saturday morning left one person dead at the scene and sent two others to area hospitals, the Rio Rancho Police Department confirmed.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. on April 4 at the signalized intersection where Alameda Boulevard meets Corrales Road, one of the primary north-south arterials carrying commuter and commercial traffic through Rio Rancho. Two passenger vehicles were involved. First responders declared one occupant deceased at the scene. RRPD had not released names as of Monday, citing ongoing family notification and an active investigation.
The collision forced a major traffic shutdown along a heavily traveled corridor. All northbound lanes of NM 528 were closed while investigators processed the scene, and all but one southbound lane remained blocked as crews cleared the wreckage.
"Two people were transported to the hospital for injuries, and one person was declared deceased on scene," RRPD said in its public statement. "The crash reconstruction will be handled by our traffic investigation team."

That reconstruction is now underway. RRPD's traffic investigators are tasked with determining contributing factors, including speed, driver impairment, distraction, signal timing, or mechanical failure. The department cautioned that reconstructions are methodical and time-intensive, and that additional details would follow as findings emerge.
No citations or charges had been announced. Depending on what the reconstruction reveals, investigators could issue traffic citations, refer the case for prosecution, or flag the intersection for a safety review by city officials or the New Mexico Department of Transportation. If a preventable factor is identified, whether chronic speeding, a signal issue, or impaired driving, both municipal and state agencies may consider targeted interventions at the intersection.
RRPD said further information will be released when available.
