NWS warns hazardous winds expected across Rio Rancho and Sandoval County
NWS warned west winds 30-40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph for Feb. 17, creating blowing dust, strong crosswinds, and critical fire weather concerns across Rio Rancho and nearby regions.

The Albuquerque National Weather Service issued a hazardous wind alert tied to the Feb. 17 forecast window, saying, "From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 17, west winds of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected in central, north-central and west-central New Mexico." That advisory flagged Rio Rancho-area exposures to strong winds and identified a broad regional wind event overnight into Wednesday.
The advisory warned of reduced visibility from dust and direct impacts on travel, noting, "Patchy blowing dust may develop due to the strong winds and dry antecedent conditions. Visibility may be reduced to less than three miles in localized areas." The NWS also cautioned on roadway and property hazards: "Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs may be blown down. Expect strong crosswinds on area roadways," and stressed, "Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Use extra caution."
A separate fire weather watch accompanied the wind advisory for midweek hours, posted for "from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday." The watch cited low humidity and increasing southwest winds as the trigger: "Increasing southwest winds today combined with relative humidity values in the low teens will continue to result in critical fire weather conditions through this afternoon across the Northeast Highlands," the advisory states. Forecast language in the advisory also noted that "another day of strong to potentially damaging winds are expected on Wednesday, and humidity values will be much lower than on Tuesday."
Local point forecasts and observations from the Albuquerque NWS office provided city-level detail for Rio Rancho and nearby Double Eagle II Airport (KAEG). The KAEG observation at 12:15 a.m. MST showed conditions "Fair" with a temperature of 37°F, humidity 52%, and wind "SW 17 G 23 mph." The Rio Rancho point forecast listed a Wednesday high "near 56" with a south wind 10 to 20 mph increasing to 20 to 30 mph in the afternoon and warned that "Winds could gust as high as 45 mph."

NOAA/NWS forecast text includes two Wednesday night variants in the product snippets: one showing a low around 29°F with a 40 percent chance of precipitation and gusts noted as "Windy," and another showing a low around 26°F with west winds 20 to 25 mph decreasing after midnight and "Winds could gust as high as 35 mph." Both forecast variants and the regional advisory text appear in the NWS/NOAA products supplied for the Albuquerque forecast area.
The regional advisory gust figure (up to 55 mph) and the local point forecasts (daytime gusts up to about 45 mph and nighttime gusts up to about 35 mph) both appear in NWS/NOAA material; the NWS hazardous wind wording is the authoritative regional alert for Feb. 17 while the Rio Rancho point forecast provides city-level guidance. Residents and municipal responders should monitor the Albuquerque NWS office for updated hazardous weather statements and fire weather products as conditions evolve.
