Rio Rancho budget process begins, public hearings set for May
Rio Rancho’s FY27 budget is on the table now, with a May 1 hearing and final action set for May 28 before July adjustments.

Rio Rancho’s next budget cycle is already moving, with City Manager Matt Geisel delivering the Recommended Fiscal Year 2027 Budget and Capital Program to the mayor and city council on April 15. The spending plan will shape city operations, capital improvements and long-term projects for the year that begins July 1, 2026.
The mayor has until April 25 to review the recommended budget and send written comments back to Geisel. After that, the proposal goes to a public budget hearing on May 1 at City Hall, where the Governing Body will review the package in public before the rest of the month’s debate.
Residents will get two more chances to weigh in during the regular May 14 and May 28 meetings. Final adoption is scheduled for the May 28 meeting, with the city planning to make any final adjustments in July after fiscal year 2026 closes.
The budget is the city’s main blueprint for deciding what gets funded first in a growing community that is still balancing new development with the cost of maintaining roads, utilities, public safety and community facilities. The capital program will be watched closely because it helps determine which projects move forward and which ones wait, especially as Rio Rancho continues to manage expansion across neighborhoods, business corridors and public infrastructure.
The timing also gives the new mayoral administration an immediate test. The fiscal framework now being assembled will help set the tone for the incoming leadership team, and it will show how much room the city has for new spending, maintenance needs and strategic investment over the next year. For Rio Rancho, the first budget vote is not just a procedural step. It is the point where daily service levels, infrastructure priorities and the cost of growth begin to take shape.
