Rio Rancho Library Hosts Smithsonian Human Origins Exhibition Through January
The Loma Colorado Main Library in Rio Rancho opened the Smithsonian traveling exhibition Exploring Human Origins on Dec. 1, 2025, and the show runs through Jan. 15, 2026. The exhibit is one of only six public library hosts nationwide and brings interactive kiosks, hands on displays and videos that aim to deepen scientific literacy for families, students and residents.

The Loma Colorado Main Library in Rio Rancho has become one of a select group of public libraries to host the Smithsonian traveling exhibition Exploring Human Origins. The show opened on Dec. 1, 2025, and will remain on display through Jan. 15, 2026, a span of 46 days. The selection by the American Library Association and the Smithsonian’s Human Origins Program places Rio Rancho among just six public library hosts nationwide, a distinction that raises the city profile for cultural and educational programming.
The exhibition features interactive kiosks, hands on displays, videos and interpretive panels that trace milestones in human evolution. It is intended for audiences of all ages, and the library has scheduled an opening reception and an evening science program for Dec. 4 to provide additional public programming while the exhibit is on site. Docent led group tours are available by appointment, and the library notes tours are not offered on Sundays or on Dec. 24, Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.
For Sandoval County residents the exhibit provides a concentrated opportunity for classroom visits, family outings and informal science education without traveling to distant museums. Local schools can use the display as a curriculum supplement during the six week run, and community groups may arrange guided tours to accommodate students and older adults. Hosting a Smithsonian exhibition also typically increases foot traffic to library branches and nearby businesses, potentially boosting local economic activity over the holiday season.

Beyond short term benefits, the exhibition underscores a longer term trend of libraries expanding their role as hubs for STEM and cultural programming. Being one of six national hosts signals institutional capacity and can attract future partnerships with museums, universities and science organizations. City and library leaders may leverage the event to promote ongoing science engagement and to pursue additional traveling exhibitions and outreach.
Residents interested in attending should contact the Loma Colorado Main Library to inquire about tour appointments and program details while the exhibition remains in Rio Rancho through Jan. 15, 2026.
