Authorities arrested John Kay, 46, at the Albuquerque Sunport on Jan. 2 and booked him into the Sandoval County Jail on New Mexico charges and a California warrant alleging multiple child sex trafficking offenses. Court paperwork filed in the 13th Judicial Court that day sets extradition to Shasta County, California, as pending and establishes bail at $1.2 million.

Investigators say the case originated in August 2025 when an undercover decoy posed as a 14-year-old and contacted the suspect online. Law enforcement allege Kay arranged for the decoy to travel to New Mexico for sexual relations, offered money for airline travel and additional funds for sexual acts, and coordinated a pickup at Albuquerque’s airport. Albuquerque and Rio Rancho police assisted in detaining Kay at the Sunport, and a search warrant executed at his residence led to the seizure of electronic devices now held as evidence.

The charges filed in New Mexico include contacting a minor with sexual intent, human trafficking, arranging to meet with a minor for sexual intent, and pandering a minor under 16. Kay entered initial custody in Sandoval County pending the extradition hearing and criminal proceedings in California, where prosecutors brought the original warrant alleging exploitation across state lines.

For Sandoval County residents the case underscores two immediate public concerns: how predators exploit online platforms to target minors and how law enforcement across counties and states coordinates to intercept alleged offenders. The arrest at a major transportation hub draws attention to passenger safety and the role that airport and municipal police play in enforcing out-of-state warrants. The seizure of electronics also reflects the investigatory reliance on digital evidence in child exploitation cases.

Policy implications extend to prevention and community support. School districts, law enforcement and elected officials may face renewed pressure to expand online-safety education, fund specialized investigative units, and ensure victim services are available and visible to families. The high bail amount and swift extradition actions signal prosecutors treating interstate child exploitation as a priority, which may influence voters evaluating public safety and resource allocation in local elections.

Residents should expect further court proceedings in both Sandoval County and Shasta County as prosecutors coordinate on charges and extradition. Local officials and law enforcement agencies can increase transparency by providing clear information about safety programs, school outreach and how parents can access resources to protect children online.
