Rio Rancho Opens Citizen Police Academy, Applications Now Available
The Rio Rancho Police Department announced on Dec. 23 that it has opened applications for its next Citizen's Police Academy, a 10 week program running Feb. 17 through Apr. 21, 2026. The program offers residents firsthand exposure to police units and operations, and the deadline to apply is Feb. 10, 2026.

The Rio Rancho Police Department has opened enrollment for its next Citizen's Police Academy, a community engagement program that will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Feb. 17 and concluding Apr. 21, 2026. Applications opened Dec. 23 and residents interested in participating must submit materials by Feb. 10, 2026. Additional details and the application are available on the City of Rio Rancho website at rrnm.gov.
The academy combines classroom presentations with demonstrations led by department units and partner agencies. Scheduled topics and demonstrations will include SWAT procedures, K9 operations, Criminal Investigations, the Crisis Intervention Team, Quality of Life enforcement, Emergency Communications, and other RRPD divisions. Accepted participants will also have the opportunity to take a five hour ride along with an RRPD officer. The program meets for 10 sessions of three hours each, representing 30 classroom hours plus the optional five hour ride along opportunity.
For local residents this program serves multiple purposes. It offers an opportunity to observe how different units respond to crimes and crises, to learn about 911 and dispatch operations, and to gain context for the department's use of specialized teams. Including the Crisis Intervention Team and Emergency Communications on the roster underscores an emphasis on mental health response and the mechanics of emergency coordination, areas that shape day to day public safety outcomes for households and businesses across Sandoval County.

From a policy perspective the academy is a practical tool for transparency and police civilian engagement. Regular education efforts like this can provide residents with a better understanding of resource constraints, training priorities, and operational trade offs that influence policing outcomes. For employers and working families the evening schedule is designed to allow participation without missing daytime work shifts.
Residents seeking to participate should note the Feb. 10 application deadline and visit rrnm.gov for the application and more logistical information. The academy offers a structured way for community members to deepen their knowledge of public safety operations and to engage directly with the people who serve Rio Rancho.
