Sandoval County Cancels Feb. 25 Commission Meeting Due to NACo Conference Travel
Sandoval County canceled its Feb. 25 Board of Commissioners meeting after several commissioners traveled to the NACo Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., leaving a quorum unavailable.

Sandoval County officials canceled the Feb. 25 Board of Commissioners meeting after several members were scheduled to attend the National Association of Counties (NACo) Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., leaving a quorum of commissioners traveling and unavailable to conduct business. The cancellation removed the board’s ability to meet on the date set for regular county business.
The NACo Legislative Conference convened in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 26, 2026, and multiple Sandoval County commissioners had planned travel to that event. Because a quorum of the Sandoval County Board of Commissioners would be in Washington, D.C., the county determined the Feb. 25 commission meeting could not proceed as noticed.
When a quorum is not present, the Sandoval County Board of Commissioners cannot legally take votes or adopt motions. The canceled Feb. 25 meeting therefore halted whatever official actions the board had scheduled to consider that day, preventing votes by the board in its public session on the date set for those matters.
The decision to cancel the Feb. 25 meeting reflects an institutional trade-off between commissioners’ participation in national advocacy and their availability for local governance. Attendance at the NACo Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., provides opportunities for county officials to meet federal lawmakers and engage on county-level policy issues, but it also created a simultaneous absence that left the local board without a legally constituted quorum for the scheduled meeting.

Sandoval County residents and stakeholders who monitor board actions should note that the Feb. 25 session did not convene due to travel to the NACo conference. With multiple commissioners attending NACo on Feb. 26, 2026, the county’s ability to hold its regular Feb. 25 meeting was directly affected by that out-of-state travel schedule.
The county cancelation underscores how travel by elected officials to national events can interrupt local decision-making when a quorum cannot be assembled. Sandoval County’s meeting calendar and the timing of commissioners’ travel to Washington, D.C., determined that the Feb. 25 Board of Commissioners meeting could not go forward.
