Sara Road and Meadowlark Reconstruction Advances Toward Spring 2026 Final Design
The Sara Road and Meadowlark Lane reconstruction is in the design stage, with a virtual public meeting held Oct. 8, 2025 and final design anticipated in spring 2026. The $419,618.64 project includes full roadway reconstruction from NM 528 to Meadowlark Lane, ADA upgrades, lighting, drainage and a feasibility study for a roundabout at the intersection that could alter local traffic patterns.
City planners and contractor Huitt-Zollars are continuing design work on the Sara Road and Meadowlark Lane reconstruction project, which launched in January 2024 and is scheduled to reach final design in spring 2026. The project is budgeted at $419,618.64 and remains in the design phase as the city completes environmental and engineering steps before moving toward construction planning.
The preliminary design includes a feasibility and analysis of a roundabout at the Meadowlark Lane and Sara Road intersection. Final design elements under development encompass reconstruction of Sara Road from NM 528 to Meadowlark Lane, ADA compliance upgrades for pedestrian access, improved lighting, updated drainage systems and utility infrastructure. These components aim to improve safety, accessibility and resilience of a corridor used by commuters, school routes and local residents.

Environmental review has been an active part of the design schedule. A preliminary site assessment in August 2025 called for borings to test for potential soil contamination linked to leaking fuel tanks near the corridor. City staff have been awaiting boring test results needed to complete a Finding of No Significant Impact and to submit the Environmental Review Record to HUD for public comment. The city indicated that a full Environmental Review and an archaeological survey will be published on the city website for public comment once those studies are complete.
A virtual public meeting on Oct. 8, 2025 presented the current design status and opportunities for public comment; materials from that meeting have been posted on the project page for residents to review. The meeting marked the most recent public engagement in a timeline that included environmental and archaeological work earlier this year and preparatory coordination with the contractor.
For residents, the project signals forthcoming changes to traffic flow and access along a key local route. Reconstruction and the possible roundabout could reduce collision points and improve pedestrian crossings, while utility and drainage upgrades are intended to reduce localized flooding and service disruptions. During later work phases, residents should expect temporary lane restrictions or detours as reconstruction moves into implementation; construction timing has not been finalized.
