Tijeras Shooting Suspect Dies at MDC in Apparent Suicide
Luis Sanchez, 41, charged with killing a 4-year-old in Tijeras, died Sunday at MDC in an apparent suicide, the fourth inmate death there in 2026.

Luis Sanchez, the 41-year-old man charged with fatally shooting a 4-year-old boy and critically wounding two other family members at a Tijeras mobile home park, died Sunday evening at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in what jail officials described as an apparent suicide.
A corrections officer found Sanchez in medical distress at approximately 6:30 p.m. MDC staff and a University of New Mexico Hospital medical team responded and administered life-saving measures, but Sanchez was pronounced dead at 6:51 p.m. The Office of the Medical Investigator will examine the official cause of death.
Sanchez had been behind bars since February 17, booked on a slate of charges that included first-degree murder, multiple counts of false imprisonment, aggravated battery against a household member, and intentional abuse of a child. Court records indicated he shot a 4-year-old boy to death and critically injured the child's mother and an infant at the mobile home park. He had no prior criminal history before the February incident.
His death was the fourth inmate fatality at MDC in 2026, a pattern that has drawn ongoing scrutiny to the facility's detainee monitoring practices and mental health protocols. The accumulation of deaths this year is likely to intensify pressure on county officials and criminal-justice oversight bodies to examine whether intervention procedures are adequate for inmates charged with serious violent crimes.
The Office of the Medical Investigator's findings on cause of death will be central to any assessment of what, if any, procedural failures contributed to Sanchez's death. With the criminal case now closed by circumstance rather than verdict, the Tijeras shooting, which shook the East Mountains community, leaves its most consequential legal questions permanently unresolved.
