Crash Blocks E Lake Mary Blvd and SR-46 Intersection in Sanford
A crash locked up the E Lake Mary Blvd/SR-46 junction in Sanford at 8:12 a.m. Tuesday, snarling morning rush traffic on one of Seminole County's busiest corridors.

A vehicle crash brought the intersection of E Lake Mary Blvd and SR-46 in Sanford to a standstill during the heart of Tuesday morning rush hour, with the Florida Highway Patrol reporting the incident at 8:12 a.m. and urging drivers in the area to proceed with caution.
The timing hit commuters heading into Sanford from the Lake Mary corridor at one of the highest-traffic windows of the day. SR-46 carries a steady stream of vehicles eastbound toward downtown Sanford each morning, and any blockage at its junction with E Lake Mary Blvd compounds quickly given the volume of commercial traffic and residential development that feeds into that stretch from the south.
SR-46 has a documented history as one of Sanford's most hazardous travel corridors. Legal and safety analysts have flagged multiple SR-46 intersections across the city as high-collision zones, citing the road's density of apartment complexes, retail centers, and commuter traffic. The stretch running east through Sanford has drawn particular scrutiny, with red-light running and lane-change conflicts among the recurring complaints from drivers who travel it daily.
The Florida Department of Transportation has active safety improvement projects underway on SR-46 in Seminole County. As of early 2025, FDOT was resurfacing sections of SR-46 and widening sidewalks to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, with work concentrated between French Avenue and Mellonville Avenue. Those projects, while aimed at improving long-term safety and operations, have also introduced lane shifts and new traffic patterns that require drivers to stay alert through the corridor.
Seminole County Traffic Engineering, which maintains more than 400 signals, flashers, and school flashers across the county including on state roadways, manages signal coordination along this section of SR-46. The office, located at 140 Bush Loop in Sanford, can be reached at (407) 665-5677 for signal-related concerns.
No injuries were immediately reported in connection with Tuesday's crash, and FHP had not issued a full road closure, but drivers were advised to expect delays and consider alternate routes through the area while the scene was cleared.
