A pickup truck crashed into Casa Leon Jewelers in Lake Mary, and Seminole County prosecutors said that smash-and-enter burglary ended with a conviction for Lenell Barnes III after surveillance video and police testimony tied him to the break-in.

Prosecutors said Barnes, 29, was convicted April 23 of burglary of a structure with more than $1,000 in losses, a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison. They said the burglary happened around 11:17 p.m. on April 27, 2024, and caused about $8,000 in damage to the jewelry store on Wheelhouse Lane.

The State Attorney’s Office said prosecutors Joan Jean, Niko Smith and Domenick Leo presented store-security video and police testimony showing Barnes as the ski-masked burglar who broke into the business. The footage was central to the case, giving jurors a close look at the vehicle-driven entry that turned the storefront into the crime scene. Sentencing is scheduled for May.

Earlier accounts from the business owner described how the crime unfolded. Rene Barrios said he noticed suspicious activity on security cameras and saw a man backing a truck into the store before entering with a sledgehammer. FOX 35 Orlando reported the suspect later left empty-handed after realizing there was nothing to steal.

Casa Leon Jewelers is more than a single storefront in Lake Mary’s commercial core. The store was described in 2021 as a family-owned business that began in Cuba in 1946 and is now run by Ivette Valladares Barrios and Rene Barrios. Its Lake Mary location is listed at 245 Wheelhouse Lane Suite 1401, a site where damage like this can mean more than a broken door or shattered display. It can mean repair bills, interrupted sales and a fresh sense of vulnerability for neighboring merchants who depend on steady foot traffic.

The conviction gives Seminole County a clear resolution in a case that stood out for its forceful method and visible damage. For local retailers, the message is direct: a vehicle-ram burglary leaves evidence, leaves losses and now can leave the offender facing a long prison term.
