An argument over weights at Crunch Fitness on State Road 434 in Altamonte Springs escalated Tuesday when 35-year-old Winston Medley allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at at least one man, authorities say. Medley was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and possession of a weapon by a felon; he is being held without bond.

An arrest report describes Medley approaching a group of men who were working out and "calling them 'weak,' " then returning to the group and "repeatedly asking whether 'he had a problem with him.'" The victim told investigators he had told Medley he "did not have a problem but that he was acting aggressively and needed to stop," the report says.

According to the arrest report, after walking away and coming back Medley "pulled out the firearm and pointed it in the victim’s face, causing the latter to turn and run." Multiple gym-goers fled the facility when the firearm was displayed, and witnesses who spoke to investigators said the weapon did not fire. "The gun did not fire when Medley allegedly pulled the trigger multiple times," witnesses told investigators, and other accounts describe him "fiddling with it as if it were jammed."

After the weapon failed to discharge, Medley ran from the gym and a gym member identified by police as an off-duty officer pursued him. Accounts vary on the route of flight: some say Medley got into a car and drove away before being detained, while other reports place his capture near the interchange of State Road 417 and State Road 400 in Seminole County.

When officers questioned Medley, he initially described the item as a "king-size Snickers bar," then told investigators the item was fake and that he "only pulled it out to scare others." Medley declined to reveal the firearm’s location, and "authorities were unable to recover it," according to law enforcement statements.

The arrest report lists case number 2026CF000385A_1. Some accounts identify Medley as a four-time convicted felon in addition to the weapon-possession allegation; the arrest paperwork filed with Seminole County courts formally lists the attempted murder and evidence-tampering counts. Crunch Fitness management cooperated with law enforcement as officers investigated the "disturbance involving a firearm" at the Altamonte Springs location, and there are no reports that anyone was shot or treated for injuries at the scene.
