Seminole County unveils event guide for America’s 250th anniversary

Seminole County used a June 26 news release to roll out a free Seminole 250 Event Guide, a countywide calendar for America’s 250th anniversary that points residents to patriotic celebrations, local-history programs and community events in Sanford, Altamonte Springs, Casselberry, Lake Mary, Longwood, Oviedo, Winter Springs and Geneva.

The guide is presented in partnership with the Seminole Cultural Arts Council and is designed to be picked up free at locations across the county or viewed online. County officials framed it as both a planning tool and a local history project, giving residents one place to sort out summer events while also tracing how Seminole County and its cities took shape.

The guide includes library programs, historical presentations, ceremonies and other community activities that will unfold through the summer. It also pulls together Fourth of July plans, including parades, fireworks and special events such as the Sanford Jazz Ensemble’s America 250 Tribute and the Geneva Independence Day Parade. A Seminole 250 Quiz adds a prize element after readers work through the guide: participants can submit the form for a chance to win one of 10 commemorative Seminole County America 250 Challenge Coins.

The county’s semiquincentennial push stretches beyond a single calendar. Records show Seminole 250 planning subcommittee meetings in July and August 2025, including an August 14, 2025 meeting that drew no public speakers. The effort brings together county government, the cities of Altamonte Springs, Casselberry, Lake Mary, Longwood, Oviedo, Sanford and Winter Springs, along with Seminole County Public Schools, Seminole State College, Orlando Sanford International Airport, the Seminole Cultural Arts Council and other organizations.

The guide’s timeline gives the celebration a specific Seminole County spine. It starts with 1765, when William De Brahm made the first surveyed map of the area, and 1837, the Battle of Camp Monroe on Lake Monroe during the Second Seminole War. It also marks 1845, when Florida became the 27th state, 1870, when Henry Sanford purchased land to establish Sanford, and 1913, when Seminole County was established from Orange County.

Later milestones in the guide include the first town in what became Seminole County, Mellonville, along with incorporation dates for Altamonte Springs in 1920, Longwood in 1923, Oviedo in 1925, Casselberry in 1940, Winter Springs in 1959 and Lake Mary in 1973. The timeline also notes Seminole State College’s founding in 1966, the opening of Florida Technological University in 1968, and the 1942 opening of Naval Air Station Sanford, which later became Orlando Sanford International Airport.

Seminole County says it has seven cities and a 2020 population of 470,856 spread across 309.4 square miles of land. By putting those figures and local milestones into one guide, county officials are using America’s 250th anniversary to spotlight the towns, institutions and public events most visible to Seminole County residents.
