Spectrum grant boosts Meals on Wheels serving Sanford seniors
A $2,500 Spectrum grant landed at Meals on Wheels in Sanford, adding help to a delivery network serving older Seminole County residents.

A $2,500 Spectrum grant gave Meals on Wheels in Sanford a fresh boost at 2801 S. Financial Court during a Tuesday check presentation, where Seminole County Commissioner Jay Zembower joined the event and the nonprofit pointed to the work behind the donation. The money went to Meals on Wheels’ Home Delivered Meal program, which is aimed at disadvantaged seniors who need nutritious meals and regular social contact as much as they need food at the door.
The grant lands inside a delivery system built on repetition. Meals on Wheels, Etc. says it has close to 40 routes across Seminole County, and each route serves 8 to 12 clients in about 1 to 1.5 hours. The organization has also said it delivers free breakfast and lunch to about 325 homes five days a week, a scale that shows how quickly a modest gift gets absorbed into everyday operations. In practice, $2,500 is less a windfall than a buffer for volunteer coordination, meal preparation and the mileage that keeps isolated seniors on the route.
The donation also reflects how Spectrum channels community grants. Spectrum Employee Community Grants is an employee-driven program that recognizes nonprofits where Charter employees volunteer, and Charter said the effort had supported more than 430 nonprofits in 33 states by early 2023. In 2024, Charter said it would commit $2.5 million over five years through the program, with a goal of backing at least 500 nonprofit organizations and more than 70,000 community members through 2028. Meals on Wheels Executive Director Mike McKee said the investment builds real community and helps both clients and volunteers, underscoring how the program values volunteer engagement as much as the check itself.

The local need is large. Seminole County’s population was estimated at 494,605 on July 1, 2024, and 17.3% were age 65 or older, about 85,567 residents. Meals on Wheels, Etc. has served Seminole County seniors since 1973, and in a county where aging, transportation and isolation often overlap, even a small grant helps keep another set of meals and check-ins moving to the right door.
