Downtown Duluth is putting one of the city’s most affordable summer traditions back on the calendar. Movies in the Park will run every Friday from July 10 through Aug. 28 at Leif Erikson Park, offering free outdoor screenings on the Lake Superior waterfront for families, couples and visitors looking for a low-cost night downtown.

The series matters because it gives Duluth households a recognizable outing without the price tag that often comes with summer entertainment. Downtown Duluth says the program typically draws about 2,000 people each week, turning the park into a major Friday-night gathering place and sending a steady wave of foot traffic toward downtown businesses. The 2026 lineup was shaped in part by public voting, with residents choosing five of the eight films, a format that gives the event a local imprint rather than a top-down schedule.

The movie list reflects that mix of family appeal and crowd interest. The ballot included Wicked for Good, Freakier Friday, Zootopia 2, Lilo & Stitch, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, Paddington in Peru, Superman, Karate Kid Legends and Mulan 2. Downtown Duluth has also said the season will open with a special night tied to the Duluth Airshow, adding another draw to a summer calendar that already includes Downtown Duluth Days on July 8 and 9, just before the movies begin.

For anyone planning to go, the details are straightforward. The screenings are free, family-friendly and open to the public, but anyone under 16 must be with an adult. Satellite bathrooms will be on-site, concession vendors will sell popcorn, nachos and beverages, and food is allowed in the park. Leashed pets are welcome, alcohol is not allowed and smoking is prohibited in every City park, including Leif Erikson Park.

The weather policy is just as practical. Light rain will not stop a movie, but high winds, excessive rain, lightning or other safety issues can force a cancellation or makeup date. Parking is limited, so Downtown Duluth is encouraging people to walk or bike when they can. Because the films are not edited for content, parents will need to check ratings and descriptions before heading out.
