Duluth police investigate shooting after argument near West Superior Street

Duluth police were still looking for a suspect after a shooting near West Superior Street sent one man to the hospital Saturday night, turning a busy downtown block into an active crime scene as investigators tried to sort out what set off the violence.

Officers were called at about 9:40 p.m. to 220 West Superior Street, near the intersection of 3rd Avenue West and West Superior Street in downtown Duluth. When they arrived, police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The Duluth Police Department said the victim had extensive injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Initial information indicated the shooting followed an argument, but investigators had not identified a suspect and had not said whether the confrontation was tied to any larger dispute. The case remained active, with detectives working to determine the sequence of events, who was involved and how a street-level argument escalated into gunfire in a visible part of downtown Duluth.

The scene showed signs of a recent shooting. A WDIO photographer observed spent shell casings on the ground, and at least one person was seen being treated for apparent injuries. The incident unfolded along a corridor that sees daily traffic from residents, workers and people moving through downtown, making the location itself part of the public-safety concern as the search continued.

Police had not announced an arrest or identified the weapon used. With the suspect still at large, investigators were left trying to answer the questions that matter most to the neighborhood: whether the shooting was an isolated confrontation or a sign of something broader, and what risk, if any, remains for people near West Superior Street while the case remains open.
