Duluth to close northbound lane of Third Avenue West for repairs
Drivers, walkers and businesses on Third Avenue West are dealing with a northbound lane closure, with pedestrian access kept open and repairs set to run through May 22.

Drivers heading up Third Avenue West in Duluth are already running into a closed northbound lane, and people walking past the work zone are being told to expect some sidewalk limits while crews repair the brick-paver street and adjacent sidewalk. The city says the uphill lane is closed through May 22, with no formal detour posted, and advises motorists to use Fourth Avenue West or Second Avenue West to get farther up the hill.
The closure began May 12 and is affecting the stretch of Third Avenue West where contractors are working on street and sidewalk repairs. Pedestrian access is expected to remain available, but the city warned that sidewalk movement may be constrained while the repairs are underway. Public Information Officer Kelli Latuska issued the notice May 11.

For residents and businesses in the hill district, the disruption is less about a full shutdown than a narrower but still significant squeeze on access. The city is not sending traffic onto a posted detour, so anyone driving through the area needs to choose another route before reaching the blocked uphill lane. That matters for daily commutes, deliveries, parking access and trips to nearby shops and offices that depend on easy movement along the block.
The work also reflects the kind of maintenance Duluth’s older street network demands. The city’s Street Maintenance Division says Minnesota’s freeze-thaw cycles make upkeep especially difficult, and its responsibilities include crack filling, pothole patching, sidewalk repair and maintenance, traffic control and street sweeping. In a city built around steep grades and aging infrastructure, even a short closure can ripple through a neighborhood.
This lane closure is also tied to a broader reconstruction plan for Third Avenue West. The city’s Engineering Division says the corridor between West Superior Street and West Michigan Street is slated for reconstruction that includes grading, concrete surfacing and street lighting. That larger project underscores that the current repair is part of a longer effort to keep the route functional and safe.
For now, the city’s main message is straightforward: the northbound lane on Third Avenue West is closed, sidewalks remain passable when crews allow it, and drivers should reroute to Fourth Avenue West or Second Avenue West until the work is finished. The city’s road closure and obstruction application is available for tracking active work zones and sidewalk obstructions across Duluth.
