Gunfire on Iowa Avenue West in Gilbert drew a fast police response before dawn Saturday, ending with a 23-year-old man in custody and a damaged home on a quiet neighborhood block.

Gilbert police said officers were dispatched around 4:40 a.m. on April 25 after reports of shots fired. When they arrived, investigators found several spent handgun casings in the roadway and saw visible bullet damage to a nearby home. Police said the residence was struck by multiple rounds.

Investigators later determined the shooting followed an altercation between the suspect and a resident. During that confrontation, police said the suspect brandished a handgun and fired multiple rounds as the resident fled. The resident was not injured.

A 23-year-old man was taken into custody without incident a short time later. Charges were still pending as the case remained under investigation.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public because everyone involved had been identified. That reassurance mattered in a small Iron Range community where a single shots-fired call can ripple quickly through nearby blocks, especially when it happens before sunrise and leaves behind physical damage to a home and roadway.

The Gilbert Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Eveleth Police Department, the Virginia Police Department, the East Range Police Department and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. The multi-agency response underscored how quickly local departments can be pulled together when a firearm is involved and officers need to secure a scene, identify the people involved and determine whether anyone remains at risk.

The incident, which unfolded on the block of Iowa Avenue West, added another tense early-morning law-enforcement call to the region’s public-safety calendar. For now, police say the immediate danger has passed, but the investigation continues as authorities work through the events that led from an argument to gunfire and a damaged home in Gilbert.
