Ocean7 Ranger Arrives as First Saltie of 2026 in Duluth-Superior
The Ocean7 Ranger docked 13 days earlier than last year's first saltie, offloading 33 pieces of heavy project cargo bound for Alberta at Duluth's Clure Public Marine Terminal.

Thirty-three pieces of heavy industrial freight from China and Korea are now moving overland toward Alberta, off-loaded from the Ocean7 Ranger at Duluth's Clure Public Marine Terminal. The 441-foot heavy-lift vessel earned First Ship honors for 2026 at 7:32 a.m. on April 8, arriving 13 days ahead of the Federal Nagara, which opened the 2025 season on April 21.
That 13-day difference carries weight beyond symbolism. The first oceangoing vessel of 2025 did not arrive until April 21. Project cargo of this scale is booked months in advance to align with construction and installation schedules. The heaviest single item aboard weighed about 130 short tons. An earlier first saltie signals that downstream contractors in Alberta locked in their logistics windows sooner, pointing to a more front-loaded build season than 2025.
The Ocean7 Ranger is not a standard bulk or container carrier. Built in the Netherlands, sailing under the Liberian flag, and operated by Germany's Hammonia Reederei, the 441-foot ship docked at the Clure Public Marine Terminal to offload 33 pieces of cargo that will be transported overland to Alberta, Canada. The ship loaded in China and Korea and navigated the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal and the Atlantic Ocean before entering the St. Lawrence Seaway system and the Great Lakes. The Duluth call was the vessel's first.
Duluth Cargo Connect will handle the cargo and prepare it for overland transport to Alberta, Canada. Assisted by tugs Missouri and North Carolina, the Ocean7 Ranger docked at the Clure Public Marine Terminal. Duluth Cargo Connect is a joint operation of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority and Lake Superior Warehousing, providing stevedoring, warehousing, and logistics services at the harbor's only breakbulk and general cargo maritime facility.
The Duluth Seaway Port Authority is planning to formally welcome the Ocean7 Ranger with a ceremony later this week. The arrival also settled the 43rd annual First Ship Contest. Sheri Dauplaise of Cloquet claimed first place with a prediction of April 8 at 7:15 a.m., the closest estimate to the vessel's actual arrival time. Her guess landed 17 minutes early.
Historically, the dates of first saltie arrival range from March 28 in 2023 to May 7 in 2014. April 8 places the 2026 season near the earlier end of that spectrum. With Alberta-bound project cargo as the terminal's first load of the year, the port's industrial freight season is already running ahead of schedule.
